A cannabis label can contain a crowded mix of percentages, milligrams, dates, warnings, batch codes, and marketing terms. A certificate of analysis—usually called a COA—may add several more pages of data.

Reading those documents becomes easier when you separate five questions:

  1. What exact product and batch does this document describe?
  2. Which cannabinoids were reported, and in what units?
  3. What ingredients, dates, and instructions appear on the package?
  4. Which safety or contaminant tests were performed?
  5. Can the document be matched to the item in front of you?

No single THC number answers all five.

Start with identity, not potency

Before comparing results, make sure the label and COA refer to the same item. Look for:

  • product name and product type;
  • producer or responsible company when listed;
  • batch, lot, or sample number;
  • package size or net weight;
  • production, harvest, package, test, expiration, or best-by dates when required or provided;
  • laboratory name and report date;
  • a QR code or document link that resolves to the exact report rather than a generic homepage.

A COA that cannot be matched to the package does not verify that package. Similar product names, reused QR pages, cropped screenshots, and reports from a different batch should be treated as unresolved, not “close enough.”

Understand THC, THCA, CBD, and CBDA

Labels may report cannabinoids in different forms. THC and CBD are familiar names, while THCA and CBDA are acidic precursor compounds found in the plant. Heat can convert part of those precursors into their more familiar neutral forms.

Some reports therefore show both individual values and calculated “total THC” or “total CBD.” The calculation method and rounding should be stated or understood before comparing results. Do not add THCA and THC as though they convert one-to-one without checking the report’s method.

The units matter just as much as the number:

  • Percent by weight is common for flower and some concentrates.
  • Milligrams per gram may express concentration in another way.
  • Milligrams per package may describe the total amount in an edible or other packaged product.
  • Milligrams per serving applies only when a serving is defined.

A value of “20” means very different things if it is 20%, 20 mg per gram, 20 mg per package, or 20 mg per serving.

Potency is not the same as quality

THC concentration is one measurement. It does not prove freshness, accuracy, flavor, a particular effect, absence of contaminants, or suitability for a person. Higher is not automatically better.

Laboratory results also have uncertainty. Sampling, preparation, test method, instrument performance, and normal biological variation can affect results. Two numbers that are very close may not represent a meaningful difference, especially when the reports use different labs or methods.

Treat potency as a product fact to understand—not a scoreboard.

What can a terpene panel tell you?

Some COAs list terpenes such as myrcene, limonene, pinene, linalool, or caryophyllene. A terpene panel can describe which compounds were detected and at what reported levels. It cannot guarantee how a person will feel.

Avoid rigid claims such as “this terpene causes sleep” or “that terpene eliminates anxiety.” Human response is more complicated, and research does not justify turning a laboratory line item into a medical promise.

Look beyond cannabinoids

A full COA may contain sections for contaminants or quality checks. Depending on the jurisdiction, product type, and test panel, these may include:

  • pesticides;
  • heavy metals;
  • residual solvents;
  • microbial contaminants;
  • mycotoxins;
  • foreign material;
  • moisture content or water activity.

The presence of a heading does not prove that every relevant analyte was tested. Check which substances were included, the reported result, the laboratory’s limit, and the applicable action limit. “ND” generally means not detected above the method’s reporting or detection threshold; it does not necessarily mean absolute zero.

Likewise, “Pass” has meaning only in relation to a defined rule, analyte list, threshold, method, and jurisdiction. Do not present a pass from one panel as universal proof of safety.

Read ingredients and additives separately

Cannabinoid results do not replace an ingredient list. For edibles, tinctures, and inhaled products, check the package for ingredients, allergens, carrier oils, flavorings, and other additives when required or provided.

For vape products, do not assume that a cannabinoid or terpene panel identifies everything in the formulation. Use the actual ingredient disclosure and product documentation. Avoid products with unclear identity, damaged packaging, or reports that do not match.

Check the laboratory and report itself

A professional-looking PDF can still be incomplete or unrelated. Check:

  • laboratory name and contact information;
  • report or certificate number;
  • sample received and tested dates;
  • methods used;
  • signatures or approval status;
  • accreditation information and scope when relevant;
  • whether pages are missing;
  • whether the URL belongs to the stated lab;
  • whether the batch number matches the package exactly.

Laboratory accreditation can support confidence that a lab operates under a quality system for specified methods, but it is not a guarantee about every claim on a product. Confirm the accreditation body and scope rather than relying on a logo.

Red flags that deserve a pause

Stop and ask questions when:

  • the batch number is absent or does not match;
  • the report predates the product in a way that does not make sense;
  • the QR code opens a generic page;
  • units are missing;
  • only a potency page is shown while safety-panel claims are made;
  • the product name or type differs;
  • results appear cropped, altered, or incomplete;
  • the seller cannot explain which document belongs to the product.

Uncertainty is not proof of wrongdoing, but it is a reason not to make a confident claim.

A five-minute label check

Before relying on a cannabis label or COA:

  1. Match the product, batch, and package size.
  2. Identify every unit before comparing numbers.
  3. Separate THC/CBD potency from contaminant testing.
  4. Check dates, methods, laboratory, and complete pages.
  5. Read ingredients, warnings, and storage directions on the package.
  6. Confirm what “Pass,” “ND,” and “total” mean on that report.
  7. Follow the rules that apply in the relevant jurisdiction.
